Subject:Yule Celebrations!!

So Yule is fast approaching and this year for the first time I am going to host a party/ritual.  Does anyone have any tips, tricks or suggestions as to how best to pull this off and/or activities both fun and festive??

Subject:Ginkgo seeds...

Does anyone have any recipe or preservation suggestions for fresh Ginkgo seeds? I have a bunch drying on my counter. Tomorrow I plan to crack the inner shells and from there I haven't decided. I could roast or fry and then freeze them. I think I could just freeze them and then cook them as I need them, but am not sure. This is my first opportunity to use Ginkgo seeds, so I welcome any suggestions you may have.

Marigold Custard pie garnished with candied marigolds.

Marigold Custard (for pie filling prepare double)


2 cups milk
1 cup unsprayed marigold petals
1/4 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. sugar
1 to 2-inch piece vanilla bean
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/8 tsp. allspice
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. rose water
whipped cream

Using a clean mortar and pestle reserved for cooking purposes, pound marigold petals. Or, crush with a spoon. Mix the salt, sugar and spices together. Scald milk with the marigolds and the vanilla bean. Remove the vanilla bean and add the slightly beaten yolks and dry ingredients. Cook on low heat. When the mixture coats a spoon, add rose water and cool. (for pie, helps to put in freezer to solidify)

Top with whipped cream, garnish with fresh marigold petals.

Candied Edible Flowers (Use edible flowers only)




Rinsed and dried edible flower blossoms, separated from the stem (see Notes)
1 extra-large egg white, at room temperature
Few drops of water
About 1 cup superfine sugar
A small paint brush
A baking rack covered with waxed paper

In a small bowl, combine the egg white with the water and beat lightly with a fork or small whisk until the white just shows a few bubbles. Place the sugar in a shallow dish.Holding a flower or petal in one hand, dip a paint brush into the egg white with the other and gently paint the flower. Cover the flower or petal completely but not excessively. Holding the flower or petal over the sugar dish, gently sprinkle sugar evenly all over on both sides. Place the flower or petal on the waxed paper to dry. Continue with the rest of the flowers. Let the flowers dry completely; they should be free of moisture. This could take 12 to 36 hours, depending on atmospheric humidity. To hasten drying, you may place the candied flowers in an oven with a pilot light overnight, or in an oven set at 150 degrees to 200 degrees F with the door ajar for a few hours. Store the dried, candied flowers in airtight containers until ready to use. They will keep for as long as a year.

Thank you so much to everyone who posted ideas on how to use all those pears. There were too many great ideas for me to try them all!

Here's the list of what I ended up doing with most of them:

20 quarts of pears in water, canned for the Pear-tree Lady
14 pints of pears in a light honey-cinnamon-nutmeg syrup, canned
1 quart of pears in a light honey-cinnamon-nutmeg syrup, canned for the farmer who connected me to the Pear-tree lady
6 quarts and 1 pint of pear barbecue sauce, canned
11 cups of pear chutney, very spicy, canned
1 pint and 1 cup of chunky pear barbecue sauce, canned (this was my test batch for that recipe)
5 gallons of pear wine (just pitched the yeast yesterday!)
5 gallons of perry (just pitched the yeast yesterday!)
one bowl full of pears for fresh eating and maybe a pear crumble
two bowls full of pears for the deer, to say Thanks to Spirit for the bountiful gift

And, I'm out of pears, except for the one bowlful, of course. :-)

I scored a load of pears today. I made a trade. I'm going to can a boxful for my benefactor, and I can do with the rest as I wish.

I'm planning to do a few canned pears for myself with just a little bit of honey. And, I'm planning to make some wine. After that, maybe I'll make some barbeque sauce. That's an experiment, to be sure, but it seems like they would work well as the base for a sauce. And, I may make some pear-blackberry jam or a pear conserve.

After that, I'm out of ideas. I've got 100 to 150 pounds of them. So, any ideas are surely welcome!

Subject:oregon grapes as wine?

Has anyone made wine with oregon grapes? I have a recipe that calls for 3 pounds of grapes to one gallon of water. I have one-and-a-half pounds of oregon grapes. I'm using honey rather than sugar, so I was thinking maybe of just going with what I've got or possibly adding some table grapes to make up the difference. Any ideas?

Aside from Feverfew (very effective, but I don't have it on hand), does anyone have any wisdom to share with me concerning remedies for PMS, particularly cramps? I'm having a very bad bout here, so I'm willing to try just about anything. Any ideas?

I'm an admitted hardcore tea-addict, and I'm curious to know if anyone has any info on the magickal properties of tea? From my experience, I find it very helpful in healing, strengthening, grounding, balancing, and to aid concentration, but I'd love to hear any sort of corroborating evidence, from either your personal experience or various literature. Thanks!

The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Casserole

To prepare for this ritual, clear a space for the circle in the center of the kitchen. Then don your ceremonial apron and hold your ceremonial spatula in your right hand. Stand in the center of the circle and face east. You are ready to begin:

1.. With your spatula, draw a banishing pentagram to the East. Then, thrust your spatula through the pentagram and say, "Microwave dinners, be gone!"
2.. Move to the South. Again, draw a banishing pentagram and thrust your spatula through it. "TV dinners, be gone!"
3.. Move to the West. Draw the banishing pentagram and thrust your spatula through it. "Ramen instant noodles, be gone!"
4.. Move to the north. Draw the banishing pentagram and thrust your spatula through it, "Mystery meat in a can, be gone!"
5.. Move to the center of the circle and stand still. Chant the following:

Before me, Martha Stewart.
Behind me, Betty Crocker.
To my right side, Julia Child.
To my left side, Martha Stewart, AGAIN!
6.. Visualize yourself standing in a giant casserole and proclaim, "For about me bakes the casserole, and around me shines the 6-course meal."
7.. Clap your hands three times and say, "It's a good thing."
The rite is over.

If the ritual is not effective, please order take-out ASAP.

Hello everyone. I need a little bit of help; I woke up this morning unable to speak. Thus far I have just been resting my voice which is helping, but I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion for herbs, teas, or other magickal remedies for Laryngitis.

Yesterday, we went to Market and Space to Grow, which is an 'urban gardening' store. At Market we purchased some sweet mustard for pretzel dipping, 2 BBQ sauces: Raspberry Chipolte & Apple Butter BBQ. 

At S2G we bought 6 perennial herbs at $.99/each and a Black Eyed Susan Plant for $2.99. 

2 Chives
2 Lavender
1 Sage
1 Tarragon

I am really interested in creating a perennial garden. Of course I will have to plant certain things each year such as basil and parsley (biennial). I still want peppermint and dill among others. I could have spearmint for free but I don't like it so much. I've loved Black Eyed Susans (biennial and then reseeds itself) since I was very young and they remind me of my Gram's flower gardens. I bought a variety a bit different than my Grams but they are quite lovely. Usually they are just yellow/gold with a dark brown center mine are gold with a russet petal like this:

I suppose this seems really early to be planning but I want to host a harvest party the 1st weekend in November.

I have several recipes in mind already:

Garlic & Sweet Potato Soup

Spinach dip in a bread bowl

Greek Spinach Cheese Rolls

Prune Cake - Trust me it is WONDERFUL!

 

I'm considering roasted corn on the cob and my apple cobbler.

So what I would like to know is what is an amazing tradition or recipe you use during the fall harvest celebrations, rituals, etc.

It's almost Yule here in the Southern Hemisphere, and I'm hosting dinner. However I am at a loss what to prepare for my friends. I know I want to bake an apple pie, but that's about it.

What sort of thing have you girls and guys prepared for your Yule festivities in the past? And what sort of games and events have you had? I know what I want to do for my ritual, I just want something fun as well. No children at the dinner, but plenty of young-at-heart.

Subject:Kitchen & garden organization and an herbal periodical

Today I spent reorganizing my kitchen and adding a 'new' pantry for added storage, which was formerly in my dining room imitating a hutch and doing a very bad job of it. I worked very hard to get the kitchen looking spiffy and organized. I am quite pleased with the results. My house was built in 1890 so there are some design issues to circumvent such as radiator pipes leading to the 2nd floor. Overall I am pleased with the effort. Tomorrow I am hoping to clear a patch of ground in my overgrown yard for the herbs and flowers I recently purchased or friends donated.  The previous owners let all the weeds, vines ground cover take over the fence and a large section of the yard. My goal is to find the actual dirt; so far we keep finding lost artifacts of lawn decorations and pottery shards. I feel like I am on an archaeology dig again! lupus_argentum & I moved in last August and didn't really have time or energy to get the yard into any decent condition before now.

One of my craft group friends owns an herb shop at one of the local markets. If anyone here lives in PA, used to attend the PARF and remembers the Twisted Sister Herb Shop.  My friend just located where they have gone, they now run a very interesting herbal magazine. I just thought I would share the info because I always loved their products and their humor.
